The colonization:
During the actual colonization in 1858, France was asked by some church and industry leaders to send an army against the emperor Tu Duc (who was the emperor of Vietnam at that time) because seven missionaries had been killed under his orders. In 1858, France sent an admiral called Charles Rigault de Genouilly to seize the highly defended city of Da Nang (mission showed in the picture above). In 1859, while sailing back to France, de Genouilly captured the city of Saigon. In 1862 France forced the emperor to sign a treaty that gave all his land to France. At first France did not want more territory, but very fast the territory grew and became the famous " French Indochina".
